Guidance on protecting  people who have been rescued at sea has been jointly issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and the International Chamber of Shipping.

Hundreds of people continue to risk their lives on unseaworthy vessels to escape conflict and hardships in the Middle East, North Africa and South-East Asia.

Julian Abril, Head of Facilitation at the London-based IMO, told Derrick Mbatha that the guidance is intended for ship captains and owners, government authorities and others involved in rescue situations at sea.
