A cholera epidemic in Tanzania's lakeside Kagunga area has killed 31 people and is a serious risk for tens of thousands of displaced Burundians, the UN refugee agency said Friday.

Amid pre-election violence in Burundi, some 65,000 refugees have sought shelter on the lake’s shores in what UNHCR describes as “horribly overcrowded” conditions.

The agency’s spokesperson Adrian Edwards that there are 3,000 cases of cholera and between 300 and 400 new cases every day.

The situation is likely to get worse before it is brought under control, he told Daniel Johnson.
