First aid delivery not enough for Yemen, UN aid chief warns

The head of the UN children’s agency in Yemen described on Wednesday how “incredibly tough” it is to get aid into the country amid fighting between rebel and government-backed troops.

UNICEF plans to airlift 16 tonnes of principally medical supplies into the capital city San’aa on Thursday, but country representative Julien Harneis says it’s “in no ways” enough, given the vulnerability of many Yemeni people faced with longstanding problems including severe acute malnutrition.

In addition to the challenge of delivering aid to Yemen, Harneis told Daniel Johnson that the precarious security situation means there’s no guarantee that those who need the help will get it.
