Safe drinking water can be provided to all people by 2030 as envisaged in the sustainable development goals (SDGs) that are being discussed by world leaders.

That’s the view of the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation, on World Water Day which is observed on 22 March each year.

It is estimated that 800 million people around the world don’t have access to safe drinking water while 2.5 billion people lack improved sanitation.

Derrick Mbatha spoke with Léo Heller on the line from the Brazilian City of Belo Horizonte and first asked him about the situation of water and sanitation around the world.
