In recent weeks, thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes in northern Nigeria after militants attacked their villages.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) estimated in February that the violence in the north-east of the country has caused more than 157,000 people to escape into Niger, Cameroon and Chad.

Kalthouma Abkar crossed Lake Chad and sought safety at the Dar es Salam refugee site after gunmen ransacked her town.

Kalthouma gave birth in the bush as Claire Wardle reports.
