Women in Spain still have problems getting protective orders against their abusive partners because the police tend to regard them as “manipulative”.

That’s according to Frances Raday, Professor Law and human rights expert at the end of her first official visit to the European state on Friday.

As Chair Rapporteur of the UN Working Group on Discrimination against Women in Law and Practice at the Human Rights Council, she recently visited Madrid, Seville, Bilbao, Vitoria and Pamplona.

Spain voted on laws in 2004 and 2007 to empower and legally protect women against inequality, harassment and violence.

Ms Raday has been speaking to Jocelyne Sambira about the issue of violence against women and their access to justice.
