The situation in Afghanistan has been described by the outgoing head of the UN mission there as “promising”.

The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) was established by the Security Council in 2002 to assist the government and people of Afghanistan in laying the foundations for sustainable peace and development in the country.

Ján Kubiš, who has served as the UN Special Representative for Afghanistan for two years, says it is a big achievement for the country to, for the first time, go through a democratic and peaceful transition from one elected President to another.

Mr. Kubiš spoke to Sayed Mohammad Shah about his mission and some of the challenges he has faced in Afghanistan.
