Another food crisis is on the “doorstep” of West Africa because of the impact of the Ebola epidemic on the agricultural sector.

The warning has come from the President of the International Fund for Agricultural Development, IFAD, which focuses on reducing poverty in rural areas.

Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are the hardest hit by the outbreak, disrupting farming activities and increasing food prices, the UN says.

In Sierra Leone alone, Mr Kanayo Nywanze told Jocelyne Sambira, 40 per cent of farms have been abandoned and food has been left “to rot in the fields”.
