An upsurge in inter-tribal clashes has been a great challenge for peacekeepers in Darfur since January this year, according to its new deputy-envoy.

Abiodun Bashua was appointed Deputy Joint Special Representative for UNAMID, the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur, on 17 September.

The conflict in the western region of Sudan, which broke out in 2003, has displaced 30 per cent of the population, according to the UN estimates.

Mr Bashua began by telling Jocelyne Sambira what issues he would tackle first as he takes up his new role.
