A locust plague that spread across Madagascar destroying crops and pasture has been successfully contained but the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is warning it could re-emerge.

The Malagasy Migratory Locust has been active over the past two years and by April this year, had spread towards the country’s largest rice crop areas in the northwest, threatening the livelihoods of 13 million people.

The UN agricultural agency says more funding is needed to continue a campaign to restrict the advance of the locusts.

To find out more about the plague, Sandra Ferrari spoke with Annie Monard, from the FAO emergency response team.
