Governments around the world are been urged by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to address what it describes as “an epidemic of crime and victimization”.

A report released by the agency on Monday says that 40,000 people have died since the year 2000 as they tried to reach other countries using smugglers, in desperate search of a better life.

The report entitled “Fatal Journeys: Tracking Lives Lost During Migration,” released on Monday, identifies Europe as the most dangerous destination for “irregular” migration with over 22,000 deaths.
