Supporters of capital punishment are expected to be told that there is no conclusive evidence to suggest that the death penalty acts as a deterrence.

The UN human rights office on Thursday is bringing countries together representing a variety of legal systems in New York, to discuss how to move away from killing people as a punishment.

Currently, more than 160 Member States of the United Nations have either abolished the death penalty or do not practice it.

Elena Vapnitchnaia asked Ivan Šimonović the UN Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights to explain why it should not be practiced.
