An African-led peace mission to the Central African Republic has been replaced by a United Nations force, a move which the UN says will lead to a number of what it calls “advantages”.

The UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) has a maximum strength of 12,000 personnel and was established to help restore stability to the troubled African country.

Thousands of people have been killed and hundreds of thousands of others displaced since the conflict broke out between Christian and Muslim communities in December 2012.

Maha Fayek asked the head of MINUSCA, General Babacar Gaye about the significance of the transfer of authority to the UN.
