People displaced by the ongoing conflict in South Sudan and sheltering at a UN base in Bentiu town live in what a senior UN official in the country has described as “very dire” conditions.

Toby Lenzer, the UN Humanitarian Coordinator recently led a delegation including western diplomats to a UN base in the oil-rich Unity State.

More than 40,000 people are sheltering at the site which has been flooded during the rainy season in the country.

Meanwhile, the Security Council has called for an investigation into the downing of a UN helicopter flying to Bentiu on Tuesday, in which three Russian crew members were killed.
