Trinidad and Tobago faces a unique situation as one of the world’s more than 50 small island developing states or SIDS according to a senior economist in the country.

Although the island nation faces many of the same development challenges of other SIDS, it does have considerable natural resources, namely oil and gas.

It is now looking at ways to diversify its economy.

Peter Mitchell, from Trinidad and Tobago’s Ministry of Planning and Sustainable Development is due to attend the third International conference on SIDS which is being held in Samoa in the first week of September

Daniel Dickinson asked him about the distinct issues his country faces.
