An Italian Roman Catholic priest who is also a medical doctor has won the 2014United Nations Population Award.

The award was established by the UN General Assembly in 1981 “to recognize outstanding achievement in the fields of population and health”.

Father Aldo Marchesini has been working in the most impoverished areas of Mozambique where he has been treating obstetric fistula, an injury that occurs during prolonged, obstructed labour.

Obstetric fistula leaves women incontinent, and often ostracized from their communities.

Derrick Mbatha sat down with Father Marchesini who first described how he received the news that he was the winner of the UN Population Award.
