The dedication and courage of people who serve in UN peacekeeping operations around the world is being recognized on Thursday, on the International Day of UN Peacekeepers.

The annual commemoration also honours the memory of peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace.

Since the first UN peacekeeping mission was established in 1948, more than 3,200 military, police and civilian personnel have died as a result of acts of violence, accidents and disease.

The UN mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has been one of the busiest missions in recent months as fighting continues between government and rebel forces.

Peacekeepers in UNMISS were asked to reflect on the importance of their job.
