Countries which are susceptible to natural disasters should be looking at pairing satellite technology with alternative power sources as part of their response plan.

That's according to a senior official from the Department of Science and Technology, in the Philippines.

Parts of the south-east Asian country were destroyed affecting around 16 million when Typhoon Haiyan swept ashore in November last year.

The coordination of the disaster response plan necessitated the use of satellite communication.

Louis Napoleon Casambre, Executive Director of the Department of Science and Technology, recently shared his experiences at the World Telecommunication Development conference in Dubai, organised by the UN's International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

Maximillian Jacobson-Gonzalez asked him how the country responded to the aftermath of the typhoon.
