Hundreds of civilians have been killed in South Sudan’s Unity State capital, Bentiu, because of their ethnic origins, according to the UN mission in the country, UNMISS.

The mission says that hate messages calling for violence are also being used to promote what it has called “vengeful sexual violence.”

The killings began on April 15th following the capture of Bentiu by opposition forces loyal to the former Vice President Riek Machar.

The United Nations Missions in South Sudan (UNMISS) said it is trying its best to protect civilians from imminent threats.
