The situation of mothers and young girls in South Sudan has been described as “unimaginable” by the UN Population Fund, UNFPA.

The agency says it needs an additional $14 million to provide emergency maternal assistance to pregnant mothers in the country.

The Director of the UNFPA programme division in New York, Mabingue Ngom said the money was required for an immediate response to the ongoing crisis there.

Mr Ngom recently visited Minkaman camp, a site 250 miles north-west of the capital, Juba.

Most of the 100,000 people sheltering in the facility come from neighboring Jonglei, which is one of the three states that has borne the brunt of the conflict.

Mr Ngom spoke with Reech Malual after his visit to the camp.
