A new treaty allowing children to file a complaint directly to the UN about alleged violations of their rights was signed into law on Monday by ten countries.

A panel discussion hosted by nine of the ten countries was held at the UN Secretariat in New York to celebrate the event.

Ms. Elda Moreno, Special Assistant to the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary General on Violence said this treaty “empowers” children.

Speaking to Jocelyne Sambira, Ms. Moreno said it’s also important that children and those who work with children are aware of the existence of this protocol.
