Countries around the world are being urged to help the poorest people gain equal access to drinking water, sanitation and adequate hygiene.

Experts and government officials are meeting in Washington DC where they are expected to make financial and political commitments to improve water and sanitation services for the most marginalised populations.

The meeting is being convened by the UN Children’s Fund, UNICEF, and one of the main issues will be open defecation, where people do not use a toilet to defecate.

Sanjay Wijesekera, is UNICEF’s chief of Water and Sanitation programmes.

Daniel Dickinson asked him what he expects to come out of the meeting.
