The United Nations mission in Sierra Leone has completed its work at the end of its mandate on 31 March.

The UN Integrated Peacebuilding Office in Sierra Leone, (UNIPSIL) was established in 2008 to help Sierra Leone in post conflict recovery, democratic transition and peace consolidation.

UNIPSIL followed the world’s largest peacekeeping mission with the deployment of over 17,000 “blue helmets” to disarm rebel militias and restore stability.

Sierra Leone was recovering from a brutal civil war that ended in 2002.

Alexandra King sat down with Jens Anders Toyberg-Frandzen, Executive Representative of the Secretary-General and Head UNIPSIL who gave his impressions of the mission.
