The release of Myanmar’s prisoners of conscience has been one of the most significant achievements by the Government regarding human rights.

Over 1,100 prisoners were freed following 15 presidential amnesties, according to the latest report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar

Tomás Ojea Quintana conducted his ninth and final mission to the country in mid-February, ending his 6-year term.

In his report, he says the situation of human rights has improved for people in the country, except in Rakhine State where there has been no improvement.

Rakhine State is home to various ethnic groups, including the Muslim minority.

Mr. Quintana spoke to Patrick Maigua on the margins of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva.
