The number of women in national parliaments around the world has reached a record high of almost 22 per cent.

The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) says the level of women’s representation is particularly encouraging in the Americas, Nordic countries in Europe and in Africa.

The increase has been driven by a political commitment by individual countries to get more women elected.

The “Women in Politics Map 2014” showing the global picture was launched in New York on Tuesday.

Patrick Maigua asked Jemini Pandya of the IPU to explain the trends.
