The international community is being asked to look at what can be done to improve gender equality and women’s rights ahead of the 2015 deadline for the Millennium Development Goals.

The MDGs are a set of internationally agreed targets to halve world poverty and include specific targets on equality and the empowerment of women as well as reducing child mortality.

The annual gathering of UN Member States to address critical issues related to gender equality and women’s rights is taking place in New York over the next two weeks.

The 58th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW58) is focusing on “Challenges and achievements in the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals for women and girls”.

Cristina Silveiro asked Kristin Hetle from UN Women what more needs to be done to meet the MDGs.
