A new metric by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to measure hunger and food insecurity faster and more effectively is being tested on the ground in several countries worldwide.

The five-year global project, named Voices of the Hungry, gathers information on the extent and severity of hunger from food-insecure people through an annual survey.

Countries and development partners will be able to assess their progress in fighting hunger and evaluate the impact of their food security policies and programmes.

Mr. Pietro Gennari, the FAO Director of Statistics, is in New York for the UN Statistics Commission meeting, to discuss new methods for collecting data.

He sat down with Jocelyne Sambira to explain how the project works.
