The people of Guinea-Bissau are gearing themselves up for elections scheduled to be held on 13 April this year.

The impoverished West African country, which gained independence from Portugal in 1974, has been beset by military coups and political assassinations.

Concerns have also been raised about the country becoming a major transit for cocaine being trafficked from Latin America to Europe.

The Security Council was on Wednesday briefed by the top UN envoy in the country on preparations for the elections continue.
