The UN Human Rights Office has called for an independent investigation into the violent clashes between riot police and protestors in Ukraine which have left dozens dead.

Thousands of people have been demonstrating in the capital Kiev since November against the government's perceived rejection of integration with the European Union.

On Tuesday the situation took a violent turn for the worse when protestors attempted to march on Parliament ahead of a crucial debate reinstating the 2004 Constitution, which would significantly limit the powers of the president.

Cécile Pouilly, spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights told Mamadou Diallo her office was alarmed to hear that more than 22 people have died in the clashes.
