Indigenous people—like people everywhere—have the right to access to healthcare.

But indigenous activists say their communities are particularly marginalized when it comes to attaining these services, thus putting them at risk of poor health.

This discrepancy is behind “disproportionate” rates of HIV infection in indigenous populations, says Clive Aspin, an independent public health consultant, and a Maori from New Zealand.

Daniel Dickinson caught up with him at a UN meeting on Indigenous Peoples’ Sexual Health and Reproductive Rights.
