A plane loaded with life-saving supplies ranging from medicines to midwifery kits touched down in South Sudan’s capital, Juba, on Tuesday morning.

It’s the first of two planes chartered by the UN children’s agency (UNICEF) that are bringing treatments for malaria, pneumonia and other illnesses, for thousands of women and children across the country.

More than half a million people in South Sudan have fled their homes over the past month following clashes between government forces and soldiers supporting the country’s former vice-president.

Donn Bobb spoke to Dermot Carty, UNICEF’s Deputy Director of Emergency Operations in South Sudan, about the airlift.
