The unanimous resolution on the elimination of chemical weapons in Syria, has been described as historic and “the first hopeful news on Syria in a long time.”

After weeks of negotiations, the 15-member Security Council adopted the resolution which determines that the use of chemical weapons in Syria constitutes a threat to international peace and security.

The resolution, a product of intense negotiations between Russia and the United States, strongly condemns the use of these weapons, in particular the attack in a suburb of Syria’s capital Damascus on 21 August.

The resolution says Syria shall not use, develop, produce otherwise acquire, stockpile or retain chemical weapons, or transfer, directly or indirectly, chemical weapons to other States or non-State actors.
