South Sudan has had to build a country literally from scratch since it gained independence two years ago, its Vice-President said in his address to the United Nations General Assembly.

James Wani Igga said efforts were being made to “fix” the former “war-devastated country.”

South Sudan gained independence from its northern neighbour Sudan in 2011, but armed clashes continue along its common border.

However, all is not bleak and considerable advances have been made.

President James Igga began by sharing with UN Radio’s Joseph Msami the progress being made to transform the national army and police into professional forces that respect human rights and the rule of law.
