World leaders review progress in meeting anti-poverty goals

As world leaders continued the annual session of the General Assembly on Wednesday, they reviewed progress made in meeting the Millennium Development Goals or MDGs they set in the year 2000.

The eight time-bound and measurable goals are aimed at combating poverty, hunger, illiteracy, gender inequality, disease and environmental degradation.

It has been noted that progress towards achieving these goals by 2015 has been uneven with some countries meeting most of the targets and others lagging behind.
