Dr. Tererai Trent is a Zimbabwean-American woman who was born of poverty in a rural village in Zimbabwe. Her strong desire to have an education took her to the United States where she eventually got her Phd.

Tererai became famous when her life story was featured in a book called “Half the Sky” by author Nicholas Kristof. Later, Oprah Winfrey, an American Television producer and host, actress, philanthropist, among other things, ran a segment on Tererai’s journey.

To commemorate World Humanitarian Day and learn how each of us can transform our communities, UNICEF’s Alex Goldmark spoke to Dr. Tererai Trent who is now building schools in her community.
