The conflict in Sudan's western region of Darfur is experiencing a resurgence in killings and displacements, despite the best efforts of the international community to find a lasting resolution. Just two weeks ago a large group of unidentified armed men, using highly sophisticated weapons, ambushed a convoy of peacekeepers and killed 7 Tanzanians who are with the UN-African Union Mission in Darfur, UNAMID.

Since the conflict erupted about ten years ago, more than 300,000 people are believed to have been killed and about one and a half million others have been displaced from their homes and towns, after rebels took up arms against the Government of President Al-Bashir, to demand an end to marginalisation and discrimination.

Many of those who have been displaced are living in very poor conditions in camps within the country and others have fled into neighbouring Chad and the Central African Republic.

The UN Security Council took up the issue of Darfur again this week and in front of the Council to brief it on the latest developments was the newly-appointed Joint Special Representative of the African Union and the UN for Darfur, Mohamed Ibn Chambas.

Ben Malor spoke to Mr. Chambas about the conflict.
