The International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers is observed on 29 May to remember people who serve in UN peacekeeping operations and to honour the memory of those who died working for peace.

One of these operations is the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) which was established on July 8, 2011, a day before the country became Africa’s newest nation.

This year’s theme for the Day is “Adapting to new challenges”.

Lieutenant Colonel, Richard Quinn, a Canadian peacekeeper who is completing his tour of duty at UNMISS in June, tells Radio Miraya’s David Lukan about some of the challenges facing UNMISS.
