A former Minister of Trade and Industry of Kenya has been chosen to lead the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon announced on Thursday that he has nominated Mukhisa Kituyi to serve as Secretary-General of UNCTAD for a term of four years beginning on 1 September 2013.

The nomination will go to the UN General Assembly for confirmation and if confirmed, Mr. Kituyi will succeed Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand who has been at the helm of UNCTAD since 2005.

UN Radio’s Derrick Mbatha caught up with Mr. Kituyi on the line to Nairobi, Kenya, to get his reaction to being nominated to lead UNCTAD.
