A new book is shedding light on the lives of African Americans in the period following emancipation from slavery in 1863.

‘Envisioning Emancipation: Black Americans and the End of Slavery’ compiles nearly 150 photographs which depict the strength and resiliency of people who had been enslaved and were now free.

It was written by Deborah Willis, a professor of Photography and Imaging at New York University, and Barbara Krauthamer, a History professor at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst.

Dianne Penn spoke to the authors who held a book signing at the UN in connection with the commemoration of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Transatlantic Slave Trade, observed on 25 March.

Dr. Willis says it was important to tell the story of people, particularly women, who had left plantations in the south for new lives in other parts of the United States.
