As UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told journalists at his year-end press conference in New York last week, 2012 has been a “tumultuous” year for the world and for the United Nations.

The intensification of the crisis in Syria, instability and hunger in The Sahel, violence in Gaza and fighting in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, are just some of the events which have marked this year.
