The economic and financial crisis has had a strong impact on wages and, by extension, workers.

That’s according to the latest Global Wage Report from the International Labour Organization (ILO), which shows monthly average wages grew by just over one per cent in 2011, compared with 2.1 per cent in 2010.

The report also finds that despite significant growth in emerging economies, considerable differences remain in wage levels across the globe.

For example, a worker in the manufacturing sector could receive an hourly wage of $1.40 in The Philippines, compared with $13 in Greece and nearly $35 in Denmark.

To find out about the picture in Africa, UN Radio’s Patrick Maigua in Geneva spoke to ILO Senior Economist Patrick Belser.
