A historic convention that protects internally displaced persons in Africa came into effect on Thursday 6 December.

It comes against continuing concern that the number of internally displaced persons, IDPs, in Africa and around the world, is larger than the number of refugees, according to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR).

The Kampala Convention, as it is called, covers displacement from causes that include conflict, natural disasters and climate change.

UNHCR’s Fatoumata Lejeune-Kaba explains the convention to UN Radio’s Patrick Maigua.
