The new nation of South Sudan is getting assistance to better manage its borders.

This week the government of Japan signed an agreement with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) for a $5.4 million project.

The two-year programme will facilitate the building of 16 border posts, construction of an immigration training academy, and development of a national training curriculum on border management.

IOM spokesperson Chris Lom tells Derrick Mbatha that when South Sudan became independent last year it inherited what he calls “a very weak border management regime”.
