How well countries have implemented the UN Counter-Terrorism Strategy is under review by the General Assembly.

The Strategy, adopted on 8 September 2006, was the first global attempt to agree on a wide set of practical action points to combat terrorism. In it, Member States also committed themselves to review its implementation.

The Strategy sets out a plan of action in four areas: measures to address conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism; measures to prevent and combat terrorism; measures to build States’ capacity to prevent and combat terrorism and to strengthen the role of the United Nations system in this regard; and measures to ensure respect for human rights for all and the rule of law as the fundamental basis of the fight against terrorism.

Julie Walker spoke with Mike Smith, Executive Director of the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED).
