Rising amounts of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere have caused the world’s oceans to become more acidic, thus threatening the survival of marine ecosystems. 

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is supporting research and action on this problem by creating the Ocean Acidification International Coordination Centre at its laboratories in Monaco. 

The announcement came just ahead of the opening of the UN Rio+20 conference, which runs through Friday. 

Dianne Penn is in Rio de Janeiro and caught up with Daud bin Mohamad, the IAEA’s Deputy Director General for Nuclear Sciences and Applications, to find out more about their involvement in the sustainable development conference.
