The United Nations and its humanitarian partners have launched new and updated appeals for the crisis stricken Sahel region in West Africa.

The combined request now amounts to 1.6 billion dollars, for food nutrition, health services, sanitation and other urgent assistance.

The UN says more than 18 million people are in need in the region.

Three new appeals were launched for Burkina Faso, Mali, and Mauritania, while two existing appeals for Chad, and Niger have been revised.

Life saving and life sustaining humanitarian aid is also required in Cameroon, Gambia, Nigeria and Senegal.

Patrick Maigua in Geneva spoke with David Gressly, OCHA Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Sahel region on the re-launch of the humanitarian response appeal.
