Over half the population of South Sudan, or some 4.7 million people, are at risk of going hungry this year, according to an assessment by food agencies and the country’s government.

They say food shortfalls have continued to worsen in the country, which celebrates its first year of independence in July.

The anticipated cereal deficit of 473,000 metric tonnes will be the largest experienced by South Sudan in peacetime and represents more than twice last year’s deficit.
