Some 2,000 indigenous people from around the world are in New York for the annual meeting of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues which opened this week.

Roughly two thirds of the world's indigenous population lives in Asia and the Pacific and the region is well represented at the forum which runs through 18 May.
