The Joint Special Envoy on Syria has sharply condemned Thursday's bombings in Damascus, which reportedly killed at least 55 people and injured hundreds.

International mediator Kofi Annan says “these abhorrent acts are unacceptable and the violence in Syria must stop now.”

On 12 April his six point peace plan went into effect and unarmed observers have been in the country monitoring the situation.

Mr. Annan is calling on all parties to avoid further bloodshed and to protect civilians.
