Next month, the world will gather in Brazil for the Rio+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

The UN calls it a "historic opportunity to define pathways to a safer, more equitable, cleaner, greener and more prosperous world for all".

Heads of state, researchers, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and activists will gather to shape how economic growth, social inclusion and environmental protection can be achieved.

The Head of the UN’s Rio + 20 Secretariat, Nikhil Seth says it’s only through a balanced approach to these three dimensions of sustainability that a better future can be secured.

Mr. Seth is also the Director of the Division of Sustainable Development at the UN’s Department of Economic and Social Affairs.

He spoke with Julie Walker about Rio+20.
